Carbon Fast - 2010 |

Lenten Carbon Fast -- Should We Consider?
I recently read a different perspective of the traditional sacrifices normally undertaken at Lent. We take personal care in abstaining from Dairy Products & Meat and/or Fasting. As Ukrainian Catholics. Some of us give up luxurious foods or break bad habits. These are all personal sacrifices; however we may take this one step further and at the same time save the planet. How many of us live only a 20 minute walk from the parish, but still take our cars? How about giving up iPod, Cell Phone, Television, etc, in a bid to reduce the use of electricity - and thus trim the amount of carbon dioxide spewed into the atmosphere. Its been said that the "Carbon Fast" is "an opportunity to demonstrate the love of God in a practical way". A Lenten Carbon Fast Calendar is available attached, courtesy of http://catholicclimatecovenant.org

World Day of Prayer for Vocations |

On May 3, 2009 we celebrate the 'World Day of Prayer for Vocations'. This year Pope Benedict XV invites us to reflect on the theme 'Faith in the divine initiative - the human response'. Our faith in God's providence is only strengthened through Prayer. Let us pray for vocations to our priesthood and consecrated life.
Christ himself has told us, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest" (Luke 10:2).
To see Pope Benedict XVI's message for the 2009 World Day of Prayer for Vocations use this link.
Prayer for Vocations (Excerpt from Knights of Columbus www.kofc.org)
Heavenly Father, bless Your Church with an abundance of holy and zealous priests, deacons, brothers and sisters.
Give those You have called to the married state and those You have chosen to live as single persons in the world the special graces that their lives require.
Form us all in the likeness of Your Son so that in Him, with Him and through Him we may love You more deeply and serve You more faithfully, always and everywhere. With Mary we ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Saved by The Blessed Virgin |

Editor's Note: This following excerpt is reproduced from the back cover from the book 'Saved By The Virgin', and provides an insight into the hardships experienced by Father Kowalsky who had been arrested for following the convictions of his faith. I was born the year Father Kowalsky had left our Parish of the Assumption of The Blessed Virgin Mary, Calgary. Therefore for me some of the material in the book provided a view into how Father Kowalsky influenced the Parishes he served both in Calgary and Edmonton. The Father Dydyk Council has proudly sponsored this Book Initiative. We are pleased to be able to provide copies of the Book to the public for a suggested donation of $10.00. For further information, please contact Grand Knight Gene Dejneka .
This book brings together Father Jurij (George) Kowalsky's complete original memoir of his incarceration at Auschwitz and Dachau (serialised in the Basilian orga Svitlo, 1980-1983), and the English translation, published here for the first time. Posthumous tributes in Ukrainian are reprinted along with new English translations - including the revelation that Fr. Kowalsky had been arrested by the Gestpo in Nazi-occupied Galicia for sheltering Jews. A project generously sponsored by the Knights of Columbus Fr. Dydyk Council and inspired by Very Rev. Mihajlo Planchak, pastor of St. Josaphat's Cathedral in Edmonton, Alberta, where Fr. Kowalsky served as a parish priest from 1959 until his untimely death in 1980. This book also includes a small collection of photographs and several contemporary recollections by members of his parishes in Calgary, where Father Kowalsky was first assigned upon arriving in Canada after liberation and the end of the Second World War, and Edmonton, where he was transferred to take over the newly incorporated see of the Western Canadian Eparchy of the Ukrainian Catholic Church. May the Almighty Lord grant that this be a fitting tribute to Rt. Rev. Kowalsky, a man of the cloth who possessed not only the courage to endure special hardships and targeted persecution in the Nazi concentration camps but also the spiritual strength and generosity to inspire his fellow prisoners and constantly supplicate for Divine Intervention on their behalf. |
